Atlantic Challenge Venturers and Rovers

Event date

05/01/2017 - 12:00am - 10/31/2017 - 12:00am

Event Description

The idea for Atlantic Challenge began in 1984 with a philosophy built on Kurt Hahn’s belief to “impel youth into life-giving experiences”, to “train through and for the sea”, to connect those of many nations in the same boats and to seek a means of encouraging and training youth to compassionate service and community-building.

From that idea grew an organization that spans the world and provides an opportunity every two years to bring the various groups together in a friendly Contest of Seamanship.  The youth involved in the program learn to row and sail a 38’ captain’s gig, building a team, making new friendships, a new understanding and trust that develops them in to ambassadors representing their country.  Canadian Crew members have offered the following comments about the program:

Throughout the world, programs like the one in Canada offer opportunities for youth to continually learn to adapt and overcome each challenge they encounter along their course. Skills are developed through participants exploring their personal boundaries, both physically and mentally in a controlled and safe manner. Each expedition, whether long or short, is run by skilled volunteers, many of whom first became involved as participants themselves.
